String of Bananas (Senecio Radicans)

History of the Plant

The string of bananas plant is native to South Africa and Namibia and an annual in non-tropical places. It is also known as a “fishhook senecio”.

In the wild, it can grow up to 30 feet tall and has leaves that can grow 1 to 2 feet long. It produces small, white flowers that are usually clustered into a group of 7 or 8 flowers per stalk. The flowers have 5 petals and a yellow center. The string of bananas plant produces fruits, which are dry capsules that turn dark brown when they reach maturity. These fruits are known as “bananas” because they look similar to real bananas but they have no seeds inside them.

The string of bananas plant was brought to Trinidad in the 17th century by the Spanish who used it as an ornamental plant. Because of its beauty, it was quickly adopted by landscapers and gardeners who would use it in their gardens throughout the Caribbean region. Botanists have named this plant after the following scientists: Pierre Antoine Poivre , Jean-Baptiste Pierre Antoine Curie , Johann Friedrich Klotzsch , Jean-Jacques Karpf , Johann Georg Christian Lehmann , and Georg Franz Hoffmann .

Description of the Plant

The string of bananas plant has long trailing stems which come from a woody base and can grow to over 3 feet, if grown outside. It has lanceolate leaves about 4 cm long on short stems at nodes along the trailing part of the stem. The species is a succulent, with fleshy leaves that help it retain water in its arid natural environment. Leaves are usually variegated with green, white and yellow edges and sometimes pink or purple tints on the undersides of the leaves. The plant grows tiny daisy-like flowers on wiry stems in summer to early fall.

You've probably seen that plant in some shape or form. It has leaves that are stringy, and sometimes they turn a purplish color. The plant itself is tall and sturdy, but those leaves can get out of control. It's called Senecio Radicanss or string of bananas. You might be able to find it all around your neighborhood during a summer stroll, but you could also check your local nursery for it. It's an easy plant to grow, so it's worth knowing about if you're into gardening!

The String of Bananas plant is one of the most fun and interesting plants to grow. It's extremely tough to kill—you can practically burn it or drown it, and it'll still bounce back. In fact, its common name comes from the way that your plant will inevitably look like a long string of bananas because of how thick and bushy it becomes, perfect for a houseplant that you can't kill.

There are many different varieties of the String of Bananas available, but all have a similar growth pattern. They're succulents, meaning they store water in their leaves. They're also perennials, meaning they grow year after year, though they do have a dormant period in the winter where they lose their leaves and stop growing. Once spring rolls around, however, these resilient plants start to grow again.

The Senecio Radicans is another variety of String of Bananas that has a slightly different growth pattern, though it's still very popular among gardeners as well as people who want some live indoor plants without killing them (it's also sometimes called the Miracle Plant). This variety has thinner leaves than the String of Bananas and will eventually trail off into smaller branches with tiny leaves. Because the Senecio Radicans is more delicate than
